Police Corporal Arrested For Killing His Baby

A police corporal, Lucky Ikharia, who allegedly crushed the legs of his wife, Dupe, and stabbed his one-year-old baby, David, to death has been arrested and detained by the police.

It was however, gathered that the conditions of Dupe’s legs worsened on Thursday morning at the private hospital where she was receiving treatment.

The couple, who got married around October 2013, had a fight over a missing N2,000, and Dupe was sent packing.

It was alleged that on her way to her parents’ home, Lucky allegedly trailed her with a commercial bus and crushed her legs on the evening of Thursday, October 30.

It was reported that Lucky went back in a rage to their rented apartment, and allegedly stabbed their child to death and also stabbed himself.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, while confirming the arrest of Lucky, said the case had also been transferred to the state Department of Criminal Investigations, Yaba, Lagos.

He said, “Yes, the incident happened as you have said. But the circumstances surrounding the incident are still hazy. This is what the police are investigating. The suspect has been arrested and he is presently in custody at the state DCI.

“When we are through with the investigations, we will let the press be informed of the full details.”

Meanwhile, it was learnt that after stabbing himself, Lucky was first hospitalised at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi Araba, Mushin on the day of the incident. One of the nurses, who pleaded anonymity, said the policeman had claimed it was some armed robbers who attacked him, killed his son and wounded his wife.

Dupe’s elder brother, Mr. Segun Akiode, told our correspondent that the family had exhausted all their resources on the treatment, adding that the only police visitors they received were from the Akinpelu Division on Sunday.

He said, “Just this morning (Thursday), her condition worsened. As the nurses wanted to administer drugs to her, she began to bleed. She became very weak, and fainted. But as of his afternoon, she has begun to regain her consciousness.

“Ever since the incident happened, it was only the policemen from the Akinpelu division who had come to show some sympathy. We have yet to see anyone from Makinde Division where Lucky works.”
