A Malaysian firefighter, nicknamed The Snake Whisperer, died after being bitten by a cobra, on Friday. Abu Zarin Hussin, 33, was admitted to hospital on Monday following an attack by the venomous reptile during a snake-catching operation.
Hussin, of Pahang, shot to fame when he was wrongly identified as a Thai man who had married a snake, believing it was his ‘reincarnated girlfriend’.
Pictures from Hussin’s Facebook page were used in the articles and the firefighter was forced to comment on the story.
After becoming a snake-handling celebrity, Hussin took part in Asia’s Got Talent, where he played ball with to huge reptiles before ‘kissing’ one of them. He told The Star at the time: ‘The pictures are of me. They used my photos and started making up stories, saying that I married a snake.’
According to local news outlet The Star, Hussin, who worked for the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department, often trained other firemen on how to identify and handle snakes. Hussin had previously been bitten by snakes and survived an attack in 2015 after spending two days in coma.
He kept four cobras as pets to better understand their behaviour, and regularly posted about them to social media.
