PETROL TANKER CRUSHES UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT TO DEATH..

A student of the Federal Polytechnic, Ede, Osun State, Dada Segun, was on Thursday crushed to death by a fuel-laden tanker along the Gbongan-Osogbo Expressway. The accident which occurred around 9.30am caused a heavy traffic on the road and motorists were forced to take alternative routes.

Irate youths of Owode-Ede, where the accident happened, barricaded and made bonfires  on the road, asking motorists to turn back.

However, armed policemen and men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps were deployed in the scene to calm the youths down and open the road.

There was a diversion of traffic on one of the two lanes due to an ongoing road repair. The victim was said to have crossed the road unaware that vehicles were also coming from the opposite direction.

One eyewitness, who identified himself simply as Lateef, blamed the accident on the truck driver.

He said, “Dada was killed by a reckless driver. I think Dada was not aware that there was a road diversion and there was a truck coming from the opposite direction. The accident would not have occurred if the driver was not reckless.”

Another youth at the scene of the accident, David Aweda, said that the driver sped off after crushing Dada, but was stopped opposite Zone 11 Police Command headquarters.

“He ran inside the command to escape the anger of angry youths chasing him,” he added.
It was gathered that the irate youths pounced on those who diverted the traffic and opened the blocked road for use.

The traditional ruler of Owode-Ede, Oba Oyedepo Nurain, said the community had been calling on the government to install speed breakers on the road without success.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mrs. Folashade Odoro, said investigation was ongoing into the accident.

"Like father, like son". DONALD TRUMP JR. CRITICISES LONDON MAYOR AFTER TERROR ATTACK..

President Donald Trump's son has come under fire for criticising London's mayor, shortly after a terror attack on the UK capital killed three people.

Donald Trump Jr tweeted an article written last year, in which Sadiq Khan said terror vigilance had become "part and parcel" of life in a global city. Mr Trump quoted the headline and tweeted: "You have to be kidding me?!"

He angered many Britons who accused him of exploiting the tragedy and implying the quotes were made after the attack.

Dozens were hurt in Wednesday's attack, when an assailant drove a car through pedestrians on Westminster Bridge and then fatally knifed a police officer who tried to stop him entering the Houses of Parliament. He was then shot dead.

Two hours later, Mr Trump tweeted an article from the Independent newspaper in September 2016.

In the article, Mr Khan was speaking shortly before a meeting with New York Mayor Bill De Blasio, on the day after three bombs exploded in New York City and nearby towns, wounding 29 people.

The attacks had given him a sleepless night, he said, as he pondered the dangers faced by big Western cities like New York and London.

"Part and parcel of living in a great global city is you have to be prepared for these sorts of things, you have to be vigilant, you have to support the police doing an incredibly hard job, you have to support the security services," he said.

On Wednesday, after the attack in Westminster, the mayor said that Londoners "will never be cowed by terrorism" and that the city stood together in the face of those seeking it harm.

Mr Trump's tweet incensed many British people on Twitter, including MP Wes Streeting, who called him a "disgrace" for exploiting the tragedy.

Others accused him of implying that Mr Khan's comments were made after the attack. Mr Khan, London's first Muslim mayor, has previously clashed with Mr Trump's father, in January denouncing the US president's travel ban as "shameful and cruel".

Last year, he accused the then-candidate Trump of being "ignorant" about Islam. Mr Trump responded by challenging the mayor to an IQ test.

6-YEAR-OLD DROWNS AFTER FALLING INTO OPEN TANK..

A six-year-old girl drowned in an underground tank that was left uncovered in an under-construction building in southeast Delhi’s Prahladpur in India on Tuesday evening.

Police said the incident took place when Arpita, the six-year-old kindergarten student, stepped out of her home and reached the under-construction building while playing.

Police have booked the builder of the under-construction structure for not building a fence around the water tank, under IPC Section 304A (causing death due to negligence).

The girl's father, Sunil Kumar, said, “She told me she is playing outside, but I did not know she would go to the building. Ten minutes after she told me she was going out to play, I heard people screaming. By the time I rushed out, she had already drowned. We took her to the hospital but they declared her dead.”

PARENTS THROW GIRLS IN CANAL FOR HAVING BOYFRIENDS...

An auto driver and his wife in Punjab’s Ludhiana allegedly drugged their two teenage daughters and threw them into a canal after suspecting them of having boyfriends, police said on Wednesday.

One of the girls – 15-year-old Jyoti – died while her sister Priti survived. Police have charged the parents Uday Chand and Laxmi with murder and attempted murder, and have launched a manhunt for the absconding suspects.

Sub-Inspector Davinder Sharma told HT that the girls – both students of Class 10 – returned home late on Monday night, confirming the parents’ suspicion of them having relationships without their approval.

“Her father offered them food laced with drugs. When they lost consciousness, their parents threw them in a canal,” Sharma said. “The parents tried to strangle Jyoti with a dupatta before throwing her into the canal.”

The girls were rescued from the Sidhwan canal near Barewal Bridge in Ludhiana a day later when passersby spotted the two girls floating in the water. They were rushed to the local civil hospital where Jyoti died, police said.

Police said Priti was initially evasive and furnished false names. She also told police that they were orphans and used to beg near a local temple and fell unconscious after eating some food offered by a stranger.

But this aroused the police’s suspicion. “The girls were not appearing to be beggars. When police counseled her, she narrated the incident,” said Sharma.

The family hails from Bihar and lives in a rented house in Ludhiana’s Barewal road, police said.
