Police has arrested a 29-year-old man in Anambra State, Ekene Ucheagwu, for allegedly killing and roasting his 65-year-old mother in Ndikpa Awuka in Ogbunka community, Orumba South Local Government Area of the state.
Ekene, who was paraded by the police at the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Awkuzu, was said to have carried out the dastardly act on his mother, Mrs. Agnes Ucheagwu, in May after accusing her of using witchcraft to prevent the progress of their family.
Addressing newsmen yesterday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Uche Ezeh (DSP), said the suspect committed the crime after his release from Umuchukwu Police Station where he was earlier held for beating the same mum to a pulp.
He, however, assured that the suspect would face the full wrath of the law.
Fielding questions from newsmen, the suspect, Ekene, said he killed his mother because she prevented the progress of her children and the entire family, adding that their 45-year-old elder brother was yet to marry due to his mother’s alleged witchcraft and curses on her children.
He said: “My mother was evil, I killed her because of her wickedness. This incident happened in May. She prevented good things coming to her children. She was a witch, others were blindfolded because of our mother’s witchcraft and because only me knew her plans, she was always attacking me.
“The reason I killed her was because she planned to kill me first because I called her ‘Queen of the coast’ (her spiritual name) but I had to retaliate by killing her first. My mother was a witch living in the sky; I killed her and burnt her body in the bush called Ogbukwu with fuel and firewood.
“I had no regrets for killing her but now I am beginning to regret my action because our people in the community have started to hate me but when the kingdom of God will come on earth they will be forced to love me again. When I killed her, the people of my community were only doing guesswork until I was arrested in Aba by the police.”
He said he committed the crime in the night, adding that he used a club to hit her and then put her in a wheelbarrow and took her to the bush where she was burnt.
It was, however, gathered that after the incident, Ogbunka community banished the suspect, which led to his relocation to Aba to continue his cobbler business at Ariara Market in Abia State.
