Beach Horror As Teenage Swimmer Dies In Shark Attack

A teenage girl has died after being savaged by a shark while swimming off a popular beach in Brazil.

Bruna Gobbi, 18, was waist deep in the sea when the killer bit into her leg. Horrifying video filmed from the beach shows a violent splash of water before the sea around the victim turns red with blood.

The footage then shows her being brought ashore with serious injuries to the lower part of her left leg. Much of her skin and flesh was missing, although her foot was still attached, according to local reports.

The teenage tourist was taken to hospital but died after surgery to amputate her leg around 15 inches above the knee. Bruna, from Sao Paolo, was visiting family in Boa Viagem, Recife, when she was attacked at the beach.

A man on a jetski is seen in the film helping bring the girl ashore.

Her cousin Daniele Gobbi told a Brazilian TV station: "The rescuers came in a matter of five minutes but to us it felt like five years."

Signs warning swimmers of previous shark attacks are displayed along the length of the beach and Bruna had been warned about the dangers of swimming in the sea, the TV station reported.

It said local authorities have asked the Brazilian government to ban swimming in areas prone to shark attacks.

According to a government agency there have been 21 shark attacks - ten of them fatal - in Boa Viagem since 1992.

Bruna is thought to be the first woman killed by a shark since the records began.
